Okay, so some people are about to see this twice, but this needs to be shared, haha.

So when Alyssa cut all her hair off, I documented it. Mostly pictures, but I thought the actual big cut required a video. We YouTubed it just so that it could be posted on Facebook, basically.

So I check my email today, and there's something saying I have a message on YouTube. It's some random person asking "Why did she cut all of her beautiful hair off?" Surprised that anyone other than people we know saw this, I go to the video's page just out of curiosity.

And, well, take a look.

7,024 views. 39 favorites. 1 comment. PEOPLE WE DON'T KNOW ARE WATCHING ALYSSA'S HAIR GET CUT OFF. LOTS OF THEM. And possibly getting off on it, considering the header image on the site that gave the video the most views. She has also been seen on a Russian hair blog (scroll down). It is ranked #6 in Top Favorites for this week in the Pets and Animals category (which is where I put it, which makes perfect sense if you knew Alyssa's pre-haircut hair).

Uhhhh.... WTF?

It was really not quite donatable. Particularly the layers underneath, which had been bleached and dyed within an inch of their life and had a tendency to dread when left to their own devices for a day or so.

I'm not surprised that random people saw it on YouTube-- it is YouTube after all, where random people watch and post very random things-- and I shouldn't be surprised that poor Alyssa is on random haircut-fetish sites. It is the Internet, after all.

But I can definitely appreciate the weirdness of seeing yourself watched by all these strangers, for such strange reasons at that. My brother got a poem published in a prestigious national magazine and I Googled him not long after, and he showed up in such far-flung places as some hilariously bitchy/funny woman's personal blog and on a website where a Dutch guy translated poems he liked into Dutch, most of the ones besides my brother's being quite famous. It was a comparably weird feeling to see that.

I mean, I know it's YouTube and it's public, but -- how many damn videos are on there? A lot. 19,600 of them show up when one searches for "haircut", which is the only keyword I gave that video. So the fact that out of all those people would find and fetishize hers...

Well, that's why I've been trying to stay off the Internet except for email and webcomics lately, and that's why my kids will have very restricted Internet time if I have anything to say about it. There are things the Net has shown me that I could have died happier not knowing about-- furries, for example.
