Sep. 24th, 2007 06:34 pmThere are some things in the UK that are reasonably priced. This includes food at the grocery store -- some things are more than in the US, some are less, it evens out.
There are some things that are even cheaper than the US if you go the right places. This includes clothing -- although it can go both ways, Primark pretty much beats all in the cheap department. I have also heard the college textbooks are somewhat less painful here.
And some things? Some things just fucking hurt. Some things, you look at the price, read it as dollars and wince, then realize it's pounds and you have to double it and then you die. I had noticed this about take-away food and restaurant food and cigarettes, but I was not expecting school supplies to be my great financial undoing. $40 for a few notebooks and a pocket calculator and a ruler and some mechanical pencils and some highlighters and the cheapest colored pencils I could find. 40 fucking dollars. It would hurt a lot less if I didn't have EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE THINGS at home, but they were on the "just buy it there" list without me realizing that it would cost me an arm, a leg, and 1/10th of my soul. Eesh.
