so yesterday I went to Meijers, and in the pet department they had fish. and they had bettas. and every time I see them I always feel so bad, because pet stores keep them in these really tiny bowls/cups maybe the size of two fists, tops. there was a whole row of them and they looked so sad.
so I bought one.
his name is Harold.

he lives with a plant, which was, typically, my mother's idea.
I got a better look at my hair, and apparently I didn't kill it as badly as I thought last night...

and that's all.

Helloooooo
Date: 2004-02-09 03:45 am (UTC)I'd get that plant the hell out of there right now if you don't want to kill your new fishy. Too many people are under the impression that bettas like living in a bowl with the top being all blocked up by a plant like that. Bettas breath air. They actually come to the top to get air. That plant will inevitably suffocate him. They can live with plants just not in that sort of set up. If you want a plant find one at a pet store and anchor it at the bottom of the jar.
Also despite what anyone has said they can live with other fish, just not other male bettas. One of mine is in a 10 gallon with 2 black mystery snails and 6 neon tetras.
And now it's time to kill the "bettas like tiny bowls" misconception. It is true that in the wild they live in small puddles of water...but nothing like the tiny jars they sell them in at the stores. Belive me you havent seen a happy betta until you've seen one on a heated 10 gallon where he's free to swim.
Bettas can live up to 3 or even more years if you care for them properly and do your research.
I hope Harold is happy with his new home and I hope he stays healthy.
Good luck!
Josh

Date: 2004-02-10 01:57 am (UTC)We had a betta before, when I was younger... it was the same sort of synmpathy-purchase as this one, heh. It's hard to see them in those horrible tiny little bowls and NOT want to buy them, really... because they are such cool fish.
